President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently in Washington D.C., meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump after the U.S. granted refugee status to 59 white South Africans, citing racial persecution — a claim South Africa’s government strongly denies. The U.S. has since cut foreign aid to South Africa, boycotted the G20 summit in Johannesburg, and escalated pressure over land expropriation and farmer safety.
Ramaphosa called the Afrikaners who left for the U.S. “cowards,” but for many, leaving wasn’t a choice — it was survival. If you don’t understand that, you haven’t lived it.
Meanwhile, back home, South Africa faces political instability. Ramaphosa’s coalition is under strain, the DA has voted against the national budget, and criticism mounts over the new National Health Insurance Bill.
